I’m enjoying my Microsoft Surface RT very much except for the fact it doesn’t support Silverlight at all and Flash doesn’t work on certain websites. I really wondered why this was. But it seems that a specific XML file on your Windows 8 and Windows RT has a built-in white list to allow flash to be enabled on these sites. For me I couldn’t get to work one of my favorite sites in the Netherlands. However there is a tweak available right now that allows you to add your favorite flash enabled site to your white list.
How to add your favorite flash enabled site to the white list on your Microsoft Surface RT , Windows 8 and Windows RT.
- Go to the desktop version of Internet Explorer and press the “Alt + T” on your keyboard. This bring up the menu tool bar with “Tools” selected
- Select “Compatibility View Settings“
- Un-check the last box “Download updated compatibility from Microsoft“
- Close out the windows and browsers.
- Open up the File Explorer in Desktop mode and navigate to:
C:\Users\[USER_NAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IECompatData\iecompatdata.xml - Click on “iecompatdata.xml” This file opens up in Notepad
- Scroll very far down to the second to last set of <domain> tags that are listed between
<Flash>
<domain>sampledomain.com</domain>
<Flash> - Find on alphabetical order the location you want to add your custom domains in these locations, don’t forget the tab key for the line up. Enter these domains without the “www. ” Enter the code as follows
<domain>yourdomain.com</domain> - On the left top of Notepad select File->Save and close NotePad.
- There are two more things to do:
A. Open Internet Explorer on your desktop mode, Select the little settings wheel on the right top and select “Internet Options->Select Delete in General->Make sure History is checked and select “Delete” again. Close your Internet Explorer on your desktop.
B. Press the Start key and select “Internet Explorer” on your Metro Start screen or in the Apps. Bring up the Charm menu with your mouse on the right side or swipe from the right side of your screen onto the screen and select the “Settings Wheel” . Now select “Internet Options->”Delete” the browsing history. Close Internet Explorer by swipping or dragging it down from the top to the bottom of your screen.
You should be all set now to go to your flash enabled site since it has been added to the White List on your device. I got this great tip from a forum post on XDA Developers. For me it enabled to view flash video’s on this Dutch Site on my Surface and extending my Microsoft Surface desktop in high resolution to my HD TV using the HDMI cable.
